Description
GHENDJE
Early 20th century, Central Caucasus, wool fleece on wool weave.
The Ghendje region is located in the middle of the Caucasus, the carpets traded in Ghendje come from the vast district and do not have a specific unitary typology. They have both coarse and fine knotting and resemble Kazak. Their wool has the same stretch and sheen, but they are usually knotted a little more densely and shaved lower. Their chromatic scale is richer than that of the Kazak and preference is given to soft pastel tones in warm colors with an abundance of creamy white, light blue, a bluish cochineal red that recalls the proximity of Karabagh. In this example, the central rectangle looks like a small carpet with four medallions, superimposed on the field. Main border with quadrangular rosettes.
